Friday News – November 6, 2026

Happy Friday!

We made it and the people have spoken!

While we cannot afford for too long to rest on our laurels we can at least rest for a moment in the knowledge of work well done. In a series of “firsts” I want to note particularly the election of so many people of color to positions that have never held such persons before.

This Sunday I will be preaching about my experiences during my recent trip to Montgomery, Alabama. There I visited the several sites of Bryan Stevenson’s Equal Justice Initiative as well as several other civil rights museums. It was more than sobering to witness the atrocities wreaked upon millions of people of color simply because of the color of their skin. The recent elections do not erase this sorrow, but I do see them build upon the courageous work of so many over the centuries who stood up to hatred and bigotry. May this work only continue.

Rev. Dr. Terasa G. Cooley

Lead Minister

Saturday, November 7, 10:00 AM

Register to Join UUs from around Ohio in this online conversation hosted by Unitarian Universalist Justice Ohio. This month we’ll decompress after a tense election and talk about how it went. We’ll also prepare for the Ohio General Assembly’s lame duck session, when a lot of bad bills could be passed before the end of the year.

Tell us what you did for Justice!

First UU – you are inspiring! During the last several weeks and months, many of you have lived our values by gathering for Democracy action hour, working at polls, protesting, working for voter registration, participating in phone banks, and more. Thank you!

If you’ve done any non-partisan electoral work please use this google form to report it to our congregation. We are working towards becoming a UU the Votecongregation, and your work helps us get there!

Please note: there will be no Democracy Action Hour this week. Take a well-deserved rest after the election and check out the screening of ‘Stamped from the Beginning”! Next week, Democracy Action Hour will resume. We’ll be making calls to Ohio legislators about bills that might move in the lame duck session.

SYC takes pride in our ability to help families overcome financial barriers to attendance at our school. Enjoy good food and drinks, while bidding on silent auction items, with connections old and new. As a community planned, funded, and executed event, 100% of the proceeds go to the SYC Scholarship Fund. Be sure to check out the SYC Auction and donate!

Eco-tip Pumpkin Disposal

Through November

When you throw something away, where is AWAY?

When fall is over, don’t toss your pumpkins in the trash—compost them instead!

Composting is a great way to dispose of pumpkins and other gourds. They can be put in a compost pile at your home or brought to one of several drop-off locations around Columbus. See the links below for locations and for helpful tips.

If you compost your pumpkins at home, SWACO recommends cleaning them thoroughly, removing any paint, decorations or wax residue and cutting them into small pieces so it’s easier to break down.

Intact and decaying pumpkins, carved jack-o’-lanterns and gourds are all accepted.
