Accessibility at First UU
We welcome and affirm people of all abilities. Here are some measures we have taken to ensure that no one is excluded from full participation in the life of our church. We welcome feedback on how we may improve our efforts!
Assistive Technologies:
ASL interpretation is provided on the second and fourth Sundays of each month. The interpreter stands on the right side of the chancel.
Our building is equipped with two hearing assistance systems:
- A hearing loop (also called T-Coil) system is installed in the Worship Center, Slowter Lounge, and Beach Hall. Those with compatible hearing aids can switch them to T-Coil mode to receive the audio broadcast directly to their devices.
- There is also an FM transmitter assistive listening system in the Worship Center. Receivers and headphones are available at the tech table.
These systems primarily offer assistance for programming occurring in the Worship Center, but the Beach Hall loop (T-coil) also functions independently for any event happening in Beach Hall.
Large print hymnals and a braille hymnal are available on request. Please ask an usher for help accessing any of the above items.
Our Facility
Our building is one level and wheelchair accessible. The main entrance (Weisheimer parking lot side) has a button activated door opener. Both parking lots have reserved accessible parking spaces, with at least one van-accessible parking space. There are several curb cuts from the asphalt to the sidewalk.
There is a single occupancy / family restroom (in the SYC hallway – ask an usher if you need help locating it), as well as two gender specific stall restrooms. Everyone is encouraged to use the restroom that matches their gender identity. (Because our congregation hosts school programs, we are required to retain some gender signage, per Ohio law). There are accessible stalls and baby changing tables in each bathroom.
Our Worship Center seating is flexible, and we use individual chairs instead of pews. There are specific spaces throughout the room left open for those using wheelchairs or mobility devices, however seating can easily be rearranged upon request if you would prefer to sit elsewhere.
Our congregation also seeks to welcome all generations within worship and our programs. Families are invited to pick up a Busy Bag with child-friendly activities at the back of the Worship Center, and our Wee Worship area provides space for families with children to comfortably remain engaged during the service. This section of the Worship Center is located near the sound table, and features quiet toys, child sized chairs, an area rug, and a comfy couch. Those seeking more space to move around and make joyful noise are also welcome to check out Slowter Lounge, a windowed room to one side of the Worship Center, where the service can be heard through speakers. This space includes couches and arm chairs, quiet toys, and a Pack ‘n Play for our youngest, as well as space for wheelchairs and other mobility devices. Two restaurant-style highchairs are also available near the kitchen.
Our Community
We are a neuro and gender diverse community and try to be welcoming to everyone. We also understand that we are ever-growing and learning: if you find something challenging, please let us know. Our Religious Exploration programs for all ages are adaptive, and personalized accommodations are available. Please contact us to discuss your needs! With the exception of middle and high school sexuality education, parents/caregivers are always welcome in our classrooms.
If you have any questions not answered or concerns not addressed, please contact the church office to seek further information. Thank you for your interest in First UU!
