Democracy & Human Rights Focus Group
First UU’s Democracy & Human Rights Focus Group works with a number of local and national groups to promote and protect democracy and human rights. Currently, our central focus is working with Unitarian Universalist Justice Ohio to organize in Columbus against statehouse bills threatening our First Amendment Right to protest, as well as the ongoing Ohio redistricting process.
Partner Organizations:
UUJO (Unitarian Universalist Justice Ohio)
“Unitarian Universalist Justice Ohio (UUJO) is a 501C3 organization that serves the 38 UU congregations and fellowships across Ohio. Our mission is to offer education, advocacy and action consistent with Unitarian Universalist liberal religious principles and to witness with and on behalf of marginalized groups and individuals.” -UUJO.org
UU The Vote
“One of the fundamental principles of the Unitarian Universalist Association (UUA) is the use of the democratic process. As an expression of our faith, many Unitarian Universalist congregations engage in voter registration, election reform, protecting voting rights and democracy, and Get-Out-the-Vote drives.” -UUA.org
Central Ohio Move to Amend
www.facebook.com/MoveToAmendCentralOhio
“Formed in September 2009, Move to Amend is a coalition of hundreds of organizations and hundreds of thousands of individuals committed to social and economic justice, ending corporate rule, and building a vibrant democracy that is genuinely accountable to the people, not corporate interests.  We are calling for the #WeThePeopleAmendment to the US Constitution that unequivocally states that inalienable rights belong to human beings only, and that money is not a form of protected free speech under the First Amendment and can be regulated in political campaigns.” -movetoammend.org
Ohio Fair Food
Fair Food groups partner with the Coalition of Immokalee Workers to support and expand the Fair Food Program that protects farmworkers from abuse, exploitation, and modern-day slavery. Farmworkers, growers, and buyers who participate in the Fair Food Program ensure that workers receive fair wages and have decent working conditions. Ohio Fair Food, the local organizing group for the Fair Food Program, raises awareness about the FFP and takes actions calling on corporate buyers to join the Coalition of Immokalee Workers in their struggle.
