Friday News – July 31, 2026

Many people are struggling these days, but especially our immigrant neighbors and their children, who live under threat of deportation, poverty, and hunger. Each month First UU works to make a difference by donating food and necessities that Jacques Angelino distributes to hundreds of local families via Feed and Read Ohio. Join us this Sunday to learn more, and help complete a whole-church justice project filling more than 200 backpacks with school supplies for local children in need. We can’t wait to see the smiles on these children’s faces as a result!

This is not an open mic, nor is it a concert. It’s a shared musical experience where everyone belongs. Participants are welcome to lead a favorite song, teach something new, join in on familiar tunes, improvise, sing, dance, or simply enjoy the music by listening. Piano will be available, along with a few percussion instruments; please bring any other instruments you’d like to play. All instruments, musical styles, and skill levels are welcome. No experience is necessary. Come and go as you wish.

Build Community Right Here at First UU!

Discover Yoga: Strength, Stillness, and Joy

Saturday Mornings at 10:00 AM

beginning Saturday, August 8

Explore time-tested yogic techniques that build core strength, flexibility, and balance while cultivating focus and breath control — all in a warm, non-judgmental space. This class blends physical postures (Asana), breathwork (Pranayama), laughter yoga, guided relaxation, and mindfulness to help you reconnect with your body and calm the mind.

No prior yoga experience is needed — just an open mind and a willingness to move, breathe, play, and laugh your way toward inner calm. Classes are led by certified and experienced yoga instructors Prasant Joshii and Melissa Sullivan, with gentle instrumental music setting the tone for relaxation.

What to bring: a yoga mat, your favorite props, and comfortable clothing you can move freely in. These classes are donation-based, there is no set fee and no one will be turned away for non-payment. Any donations will be shared between the instructors and First UU.

Toni Morrison

Author & Nobel Prize Winner

This week, we want to celebrate Ohio novelist, editor, and Pulitzer and Nobel prize winner Toni Morrison. Ohio Humanities is hosting a statewide celebration of Morrison from February 2026 – February 2027.

“Toni Morrison was a Nobel Prize– and Pulitzer Prize–winning novelist, editor, and professor. Her novels are known for their epic themes, exquisite language, and richly detailed Black characters. The most famous and well-regarded are Beloved, The Bluest Eye, Sula, and Song of Solomon. In 1993, Morrison became the first Black woman to receive the Nobel Prize in Literature. Despite her worldwide acclaim, the Ohio native was rarely writing full-time. She balanced working on her books with editing for Random House as well as teaching at Princeton and Howard Universities. Through her own novels and the books she edited, she was instrumental in developing the canon of Black American literature. Morrison died in 2019 at age 88.” (from biography.com)
