We frequently use light metaphorically to mean good, and darkness to mean bad. This language subtly reinforces white superiority, as well as a fear of what is unknown or not within our control. As the Fall Equinox approaches and more of our days are spent in darkness than light, let’s take this opportunity to examine our theology of darkness. Let us listen to the wisdom of earth-based traditions that recognize the value of darkness just as much as light. Let’s celebrate darkness!
