OWL: Our Whole Lives Sexuality Education (Sunday mornings, during 11am service)
13-14 years (8th), whole year mid Sept-mid May (starts 9/29) 10:30am-12:15pm
FULL (next starting autumn 2025) 6-7 years (K/1), 8 weeks, 10:55am-12:15pm
FULL (next starting autumn 2025) 10-11 years (5th), 10 weeks, 10:55am-12:15pm
Choosing when to sign up: take into account the child's physical & emotional maturity, not just the age guidelines. We welcome our SYC, ROCS, and Central Ohio community to join us; however, class sizes are limited and priority is given to First UU members and volunteers. Each OWL class will have a parent/caregiver and a student orientation which are mandatory for participation in the class. **Children/youth taking a class that doesn't last all year should also sign up for regular drop-in Sunday School.
Preferred OWL Session
Any
Fall 2024
Fall 2025
Preference is taken into account but final assignment is based on class age spread, gender distribution and separation of siblings.
Additional Sunday School Classes (during 11am service)
Infant and Toddler Room, ages 3 months-3 years, 10:30am-12:30pm
Early Spirit Play, ages 3-6 years (children start in the service and join class after the story) 11:15am-12:15pm
Older Spirit Play, ages 7-10 years (chil(children start in the service and join class after the story) 11:15am-12:15pm
Building a Better World (Middle / HS Games), ages 11-HS senior, 11am-12:15pm
Coming of Age, ages 14 years-HS Senior, 11am-12:15pm
If less than 5 children sign up for a Sunday School class, that class may be combined with a neighboring age group. If you are signing up for an OWL class that does not meet the entire year, and your child will attend Sunday School while they are not in OWL, please remember to sign up for drop-in class as well. Coming of Age is a closed cohort class that requires a firm commitment and consistent attendance; the other classes listed here are drop-in.

Family Rights & Responsibilities at First UU Columbus
PROGRAM KNOWLEDGE: You may know about our philosophy, methodology, and policies regarding safety and discipline. Parents are welcome to visit at any time. For safety’s sake, please introduce yourself.
SAFETY: Two adults or one adult & one youth — who will have signed our code of ethics and have undergone a criminal background check — will lead every Sunday School class with care and attention to the needs of everyone.
CONFIDENTIALITY: Sensitive concerns that you share with the RE Staff, Teachers or Team will be confidential, except as mandated by state law for reporting or as necessary to save lives.
REGISTRATION: Students must be registered every year, providing current contact, special needs & family structure information.
FINANCIAL SUPPORT: A regular pledge based on your finances is expected of every family, whether adults chose to become members or not.
TIME AND TALENT SUPPORT: Volunteering in RE is expected. We recommend that parents be part of a teaching team every third year to better understand the program and take on lesser roles in other years.
SUPERVISION: At all times when on church grounds, children must be supervised. When children are not in class, parents/guardians are responsible for their safety. Children aged 10 and younger may not be dropped off at church. Special arrangements may be made to designate a “church guardian.” If you can be available by cell during Sunday School it will make it easier to reach you in an emergency.
DROPOFF/PICKUP: Children under age 7 must be signed in and out of their Sunday School classes by a parent or guardian.
ASSUME BEST PARENTING: We have a variety of parenting styles and beliefs about good parenting at First UU. There can be occasion for conflicts among parents. Absent abuse, either verbal or physical, which must be reported, assume best parenting intentions.
Please check each box to denote that you read it.
I agree to the Family Rights and Responsibilities
I will fill out the 2024 RE Medical Information and Permission Form before my child's first class!
We need this information in case of an emergency! Registration for closed cohort classes like OWL and Coming of Age is not considered complete, and spots cannot be held without your family medical form, found on our website: https://firstuucolumbus.org/learning/sunday-school/
