Friday News – May 9, 2025

One of the things I admire so much about this congregation is the ongoing commitment to social change through the BREAD organization. Working with other congregations across the city to understand the changes that are most needed for our community, and then to meet as a powerful group with city leaders to demand change is an inspiring way to fulfill our mission to “Transform Ourselves and Our World through Reason and Love.” The Nehemiah Action night is next Tuesday and we are often the largest group that attends this big rally. A previous teaching commitment will preclude my attendance, unfortunately, but I will be thinking of you with great pride! I hope as many of you as possible can attend, and I look forward to doing so with you next year!

Amber Achieved New Professional Status!

On Wednesday April 30, our Director of Religious Exploration, Amber Scott, passed her panel interview with the UUA’s Religious Education Credentialing Committee. Please join us in congratulating Amber for achieving the status of Credentialed Religious Educator, Advanced Level!

Completion of this multi-year programrequires formal continuing education, regular contact with a seasoned mentor, a substantial amount of reading, and submission of a vast portfolio of competency writing that includes work samples. Candidates then present to and are questioned by the committee. Amber will be recognized in the Service of the Living Tradition at General Assembly in June.

Amber has served as our professional religious educator since August 2019, and has been part of our congregation since she became an Ohio State student in 2004. Amber brings her skills as an art and early childhood educator, and her expertise from over two decades of peer leadership as a UU youth and young adult to this vocation.

Annual Pledge Campaign

Thank you to everyone who has submitted your FY 26 Pledge Form! We have received 37% of our expected pledge forms, but there’s still time! Submitting your pledge (even if you plan to keep it the same) helps us budget for the upcoming year. It only takes 2 minutes to submit your pledge in Realm or on First UU’s Website. We appreciate all you do to help us live into our shared values!

Justice & Volunteering

Protesters, Know Your Rights!

Protest plays an important role in our society to make sure human rights are acknowledged by institutions with power. In the U.S., you have the First Amendment right to peacefully assemble to protest. However, the current political environment where individuals are being detained & deported without due process of law for engaging in First Amendment-protected activities is concerning from a legal standpoint. Visit the ACLU of Ohio website for valuable information about your right to protest and what to do if you are confronted by a police officer during a protest.

Ohio Feed and Read Collection

This month’s collection for the Feed and Read program is high protein staples, coloring books, and socks! Pick up a green bag outside the Worship center and return it next week with items you have purchased.

Body Wisdom Wednesdays: Mindful Movement Practice

May 21, 6:45–8:30pm

1st & 3rd Wednesdays

Offered sliding scale, by Whitney Dawn Pyles! Please register if able, suggested donation $15–$40 per class. Join us for an evening of somatic exploration to cultivate a kinder relationship with the body, nervous system, and self. Mindful Movement supports presence, engages curiosity, invites expression, and encourages connection. In a world that often pulls us away from ourselves and one another, this is a chance to pause, move, and remember that healing, play, and community are all still available to us.

This is an 18+, beginner-friendly space for nervous system support, creative exploration, and meaningful connection. After the session, we’ll hold informal space to gather—feel free to bring a non-alcoholic drink or snack for yourself or to share. Option to request childcare available.
