Friday News – February 14, 2025

During these cold winter months, we often think of bears, hedgehogs, and other animals that hide in their burrows to stay warm and hibernate until the sun returns. But if you look out your window, you may see that some animals pass the winter months scurrying about, foraging for acorns or other food, and spend these snowy days being rather busy. That’s what your church office feels like right now.

Our church is moving to a new kind of church record keeping solution called Realm®. It primarily serves the administrative needs of our staff, but it also offers some exciting opportunities to support the way you are involved in our church. Realm will make it easier for our church family to connect with each other, keep up with what’s going on, and communicate with each other. We are rolling out Realm in stages, to make it the best experience possible for everyone. In the coming weeks, invitations will be sent out to church leaders and members we embark on this new journey. If you have any questions, or if you are as excited as we are to learn about Realm, please email us at realm@firstuucolumbus.org.

Thank you for traveling this journey with us!

P. S. The Mid-Year meeting is just around the corner on March 2 – Please plan to attend, and you’ll learn about Realm and everything that’s going on at First UU!

The Nominating Committee is looking for a Moderator to lead our business and special meetings. This one-year role includes attending one Annual Meeting, one Mid-Year Meeting, and any rare special meetings, plus practice sessions with the Board. If you’re a member in good standing who is comfortable speaking to groups and enjoys helping the church, we’d love to hear from you! The new Moderator, Nominating Committee Members, and Board Members will be elected by a vote of the congregation at our annual meeting in June. Let us know if you are interested!

Please email your recommendations to Nominating Committee!

Justice & Volunteering

DEI Boycott

Join the DEI (Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion) boycott on big business for 24 hours on Friday, February 28!

Anyone can participate safely and peacefully at home. But all our efforts combined can potentially have a big impact, especially if this first round makes a big splash and folks are able to organize future rounds that are more extended and targeted. It seems to be based on Rev. Al Sharpton’s ideas, though it’s unclear where this specific plan originated. I invite you to try it and we’ll see what happens!

-Rev. Amanda Hays

Here’s more information:

When:

Friday February 28th from 12:00 AM to 11:59 PM

Do not spend money on:

• Fast Food

• Gas

• Major Retailers

If Necessary:

• Buy essential items such as Food, Medicine, Emergency Supplies

• If you must spend, ONLY support small, local businesses.

Spread the Message!

• Talk about it.

• Post about it.

• Document your actions that day!

Why This Matters:

• Corporations and banks have been backing out of their commitments to DEI since Trump’s election, but they still care about their bottom line.

• If we disrupt the economy for just ONE day, it sends a powerful message.

• If they don’t listen we can make the next blackout longer.

We are powerful!

And we must use the power we do have!

We can send an economic message with our numbers as the Civil Rights leaders did in the 60’s.

Ohio Feed and Read Collection

February’s collection for the Feed and Read program is high protein staples to help keep people warm and fed during these winter months. Pick up a green bag outside the Worship center and return it next week with items you have purchased.

All are welcome to help pack and load on Sundays at 12:45, See Jacques Angelino on Sundays in Beach Hall during Breakfast and Coffee hour for more information.

Share about Our Rights

All people in the United States, regardless of immigration status, have certain rights and protections under the U.S. Constitution! If you, your loved one, or anyone you know is concerned about a potential encounter with Immigration & Customs Enforcement (ICE), you can spread some basic information about these rights.

The Immigrant Legal Resource Center has Red Cards in many languages with a short guide to help people assert their rights and defend themselves in many situations, such as when ICE agents go to a home. You can also watch videos from the We Have Rights national immigrant defense campaign, available in multiple languages.

Check these resources online or pick up some cards and handouts at the JAM table in Beach Hall on Sunday.
