Friday News – April 25, 2025

From Monday Noon to Wednesday evening, I attended, via Zoom, a conference of retired UU ministers, well over 200 of us from all parts of the US and Canada. I served with several local ministers on the Worship Planning Team, including our own Rev. Kathleen Fowler. We worked up at our congregation in Lewis Center, using their pulpit with its wonderful floral quilt as a backdrop. Rev. Jef Gamblee, a whiz at tech, took the videos of us as we spoke, and edited all of our words with musical interludes to make up three taped services.

The conference was wonderful. Rev. Wendy Fish, another Emerita here was there, and other members of our congregation who are retired ministers. Somehow, the Zoom flow worked perfectly throughout, even with all those people. My ordinary anxiety with all tech things ebbed in a short time, I ended up enjoying wonderful conversations with colleagues in breakout rooms.

The stories! When ministers get together, I am most often best moved by the stories we share,

stories of our anxieties, mistakes, regrets, yes, but stories that illustrate the fortune and great joys of this work, despite the crises and bumps in the road. We heard two full Odysseys, which is our word for an autobiography. This time, a collegial spouse and a ministerial colleague offered Odysseys. Both were profoundly moving and awe-inspiring in different ways. And for those of you who are Doonesbury fans, the character of Rev. Scott Sloan was partially based on one of us, Rev. Scott McClellan, who was Gary Trudeau’s undergrad roommate.

Some retired colleagues are widowed, some are in retirement communities; some, even in their 90’s, are living on farms or in busy city centers. But our experiences over-lap. We all know joy and grief and hurting bodies, and are great companions to each other.

See you Sunday.

Rev. Dr. Marco Belletini

Minister Emeritus

From First UU Leadership

Happy Spring!

After a few weeks of what my son calls “Ohio weather”, spring is here and in full bloom. I’m reminded of the Mary Oliver line from the poem Invitation; “Do not walk by without pausing to attend to this rather ridiculous performance.” This also means its time to get out there and engage with the new growth and prepare for our warmer times outdoors by joining us Saturday.

Other improvements at First UU continue as we improve safety and welcoming. Have you experienced arriving for a late or night time activity and noticed the new lighting we’ve had installed? Besides the sidewalk illuminating bollards at the front entrance, we’ve refreshed the main floodlight on the clearstory up front, added a security/walkway light outside the staff office wing and replaced several older outdoor fixtures at the SYC side of the building. These are all LED and operate with an automatic nighttime sensor. We have more planned for the playgrounds and around the memorial garden patio.

In exciting facility news we are now using products from the Glen Avenue Soap Company. Last week we removed all the EcoLab dispensers and had them replaced in the restrooms, classroom spaces & kitchen. Glen Avenue is a local company known for its natural, organic foaming soaps and I’m hearing from many happy people since the change. Try it out. Smells great too! (Feels very spring adjacent).

Finally, thanks to a generous donation we’ve put in a new wheelchair accessible parking space below the main entrance walkway. This summer we’ll be getting holes patched and repairs made with new striping and signage for both of our lots.

I’ll leave with a request for a volunteer or two. I’m looking for someone with experience in IT, specifically networking tech. We have a semi-complicated wifi and wired network that I could use help to make a few changes and reconfigure properly. And if anyone has interest and skills with ‘fixing things’ in general, let me know of your skillset and interest as we always have things that need fixing.

Don’t forget to get outside and unplug!

Eco-Tip: Opt In to Green Gaming

Video games in the United States each year alone create more greenhouse pollution than 5 million cars. If you play video games, consider switching into eco mode. The studios behind many popular video games have begun offering that option to help shrink gamers’ energy use. Since these modes are optional, you might have to go into your game settings to opt in. Most gamers won’t notice the minor differences in graphics quality — but using power-saving mode can have a noticeable impact on greenhouse emissions.
