Justice Update: Defund Fear

Tuesday January 26, 2021
Our Racial Justice and Immigration Focus Group hosted an opportunity to watch a webinar from UUA’s Side With Love and then gather in a Zoom meeting with First UUers afterward for discussion.

Webinar Description

Conversation with Zach Norris, author of Defund Fear: Safety Without Policing, Prisons, and Punishment (Beacon Press). Zach Norris is the executive director of the Ella Baker Center for Human Rights, which creates campaigns related to civic engagement, violence prevention, juvenile justice, and police brutality, with a goal of shifting economic resources away from prisons and punishment and towards economic opportunity. He is also the cofounder of Restore Oakland and Justice for Families, both of which focus on the power of community action. This Webinar is part of Side With Love’s 30 Days of Love: https://sidewithlove.org/week-two

Social Justice Bingo Card

Your Justice Action Ministry is experimenting with a new way to communicate opportunities to get involved in Justice at First UU: a Justice Bingo Card. You can also see the Google Sheet or download an Excel or PDF version below. “V” marks actions that can be taken completely virtually, and opportunities with a * are urgent and time-sensitive. Take a look at the card and see if there are any opportunities you’re interested in. We’d love to hear any feedback you have (email amanda@firstuucolumbus.org). There will be updates in the coming months!
