Friday News – August 28, 2026

I can’t say that August has been my favorite month so far this year! I was one of the unfortunate ones to have lost power for four and a half days during the recent storms. And I managed to pick up a case of COVID at the memorial service for Paula Egbert (If you were in attendance and have symptoms please get tested!)

These are what as known as “act of God” events – in other words things you have no control over. And I don’t like being out of control! I don’t know many who do.

And yet there is still some meaning to be made from such occasions. I have learned not to take for granted the ways in which my life is dependent upon electricity! And I found myself having to do old-fashioned things like read by candlelight – actually quite a sweet thing to do. Staying home for days at a time to recover from COVID has given me time to think about what I want to spend my time on, rather than what I have to spend my time on.

When we are at the mercy of things we can’t control, we can learn how to reframe the experience. It doesn’t make it wonderful, but it does give us new perspective and ways of thinking about our lives. Here’s to a better September!

P.S. I am so saddened to hear of Dolly Parton’s death. Charlotte Clymer put it best: We love Dolly Parton’s music, but that’s not why we love her. We love her because she spent her entire life unconditionally loving us.

Victor Green

Postal Worker, Entrepreneur, Innovator

This week, we want to celebrate Victor Green, creator of the “Green Book”. From the 1940s through the 1970s, Black American travelers were restricted from many of the hotels, attractions, services and restaurants that catered to the larger, white population. Green’s travel guide specialized in providing information to travelers who were people of color during the Jim Crow era. The book warned Black American drivers about routes to avoid and promoted positive recreation experiences for Black Americans traveling the nation’s highways. Eventually, as with public transit and the larger college industrial complex, travel accommodations & services expanded to African Americans in part because providers realized although their skin was black, their money was still green. In this way, Victor Green helped African Americans force their way into the American dream of leisure, travel, and the open road.

Learn more about the Green book at this virtual Green Book exhibit, and read about Victor’s story at the Federal Highway of Administration’s website, or watch the real story of the Green Book (4:16) on youtube, produced by Vox.com

Thank you, Don Merrill, for submitting this article!
