Friday News – March 27, 2026

This Sunday, we’re going to explore the spiritual practice of paying attention to the little, often unseen, everyday moments in our lives. Poet Devin Kelly writes, “our attention is a gift because it reminds us, every waking second, that we are in the presence of so many somethings that exist without our permission and to the benefit of our curiosity, our imagination, and our understanding of beauty.” This weekend, I invite all of us to pay attention to the “so many somethings” around us and consider what we might discover about ourselves, our community, and our future.

“Attention as a Gift”

“Our attention is a gift because it reminds us, every waking second, that we are in the presence of so many somethings that exist without our permission and to the benefit of our curiosity, our imagination, and our understanding of beauty. Our attention reminds us that we are here, that we should look around. It begs us to consider.” – Devin Kelly

We Need Easter Candy Pronto!

Leave your donations of Peanut / Tree Nut Free Candy and other fun giveaway items in the copy room by Sunday, April 5th! We already have more than enough plastic eggs – our teens hide the empty ones (to keep squirrels from chewing on them) and then kiddos turn them in and pick out what prizes they want.

Donations of throwing color powder (for Holi) are also welcome ASAP! Children’s egg hunts happen during the 11am Easter service, and throwing color happens after – so that the whole community can join in the fun or come watch the chaos!

2026 Child Dedications

Register by April 7 at midnight

for April 12 Child Dedication

From the beginning of time, families have brought their children to houses of worship for dedication, out of a reverence for the mystery of life and a desire that their precious children should have the love and support of community as they grow into adulthood. Our ceremony is both the dedication of parents/caregivers to their children and the dedication of this congregation to the privilege of providing these children with opportunities for spiritual growth.

This ritual is part of our Flower Communion / Earth Day service on April 12th. Families are invited to attend in person so that we can honor you as a congregation. Your family will receive a certificate and flowers. There is no age limit for participation! Families with child/ren who would like to be recognized in our 2026 dedication should fill out this form, which is due by midnight April 7th!

Out of Office

Update for Friday March 27th

Thanks to Gabe MacDonald for doing a ride-along with Jacques: your connection with the families and kids was impressive and fun.

As of Tuesday 3/24, we have helped 1969 families since Dec 22, when ICE began its invasion of Franklin County. We provide a bag with food for two days for a family of four. More help is needed with donations and food.

A special thanks to all the people who helped on Sunday to pack bags of pinto beans and place message labels on them, we did enough for 109 families. That was a joyful community hands-on action.

We always need gift cards for Walmart, Aldi,& VISA for families to use to provide for personal needs.

Eco-tip for March

As we enter the season of renewal, let’s remember to give some thought to the planet. One easy step, avoid single-use plastics – this helps reduce fossil fuel consumption, saves energy, and reduces the amount of trash that goes into the landfill. Keep reusable shopping bags in your car and take them with you into the store. I still have and use one cloth bag that I got at a professional meeting in 1994: over the last 30 years that one bag has allowed me to say “no” to several thousand single-use bags.

Job Opportunities available now!

Camp Indigo – a summer day camp for transgender and gender expansive youth – is coming to Columbus!

Camp Indigo was founded in 2015 on the belief that trans and gender diverse kids deserve a ‘normal’ summer day camp experience. When so much of a child’s life is based on educating others and trying to find their place in the world, Camp Indigo is what childhood is meant to be: fun, friend-centered, and full of wonder.

Kids and teens ages 5-17 can expect to connect with 75+ trans peers in a silly and connected day camp environment. It’s going to be a blast! Discount codes and summer job opportunities at the website! Find out more and register at www.thecampindigo.org

Elijah Pierce:

Preacher, Barber, Wood Carver,

& National Heritage Artist

Elijah Pierce was recognized as America’s foremost wood carver of 20th century folk art by Dr. Robert Bishop, founding Director of the Museum of American Folk Art. Born in Baldwin, Mississippi, in1892 and raised on a farm, Pierce began to carve at age seven when given his first penknife. His uncle, a chair and basket maker, taught him how to work with wood. In 1920, Elijah was issued a preacher’s license and followed his future wife, Cornelia Houeston to Columbus where he opened a barber shop in 1923. Pierce carved a small elephant as a gift for his wife. Seeing that she liked it so much he carved an entire zoo and other sculptures during spare moments.

He believed God had given him the talent to carve images based on scenes from the Bible. During the 1930s and 1940s, he preached throughout the Midwest and South at carnivals and fairs, often bringing his carvings with him to use as teaching tools. Among his carvings were African-inspired fables, Freemasonry symbols, African-American heroes, including Martin Luther King, Jr. and Joe Louis. Eventually his repertoire of subjects expanded to chronicle the uneasy racial and political environment associated with the Civil Rights movement, the Vietnam War, and Watergate. Pierce’s wry wit and keen insight into the temptations of modern life is evident in many of his carvings.

In 1982 the National Endowment for the Arts awarded him a National Heritage Fellowship as one of 15 master traditional artists. In 2020 there was a retrospective exhibit of his work at the Barnes Institute in Philadelphia. After his death, the Martin Luther King, Jr. Performing and Cultural Arts Complex recognized his work by naming the Elijah Pierce Gallery in his honor. The Columbus Museum of Art (CMA) owns over 80 of his pieces.

We hope you will Visit the CMA to view several relief carvings installed in Gallery 4 that depict political, religious and moral commentary and several animal carvings in the “Cats” gallery. Learn more about Elijah Pierce on the National Endowment for the Arts website, check out these articles from Forbes, NPR, Columbus Monthly, or watch this video (18 min) on folkstreams.net
