Our Environmental Justice and Sustainability Focus Group (Eco-Justice for short) helps First UU to teach environmental responsibility by example, as well as working with local groups that help protect our environment for all.

Projects:

Green and Growing Capital Campaign

First UU is committed to our environment.  As part of our most recent capital campaign, appropriately titled “Green and Growing”, we made many green building improvements.

One example was the addition of a medium sized solar array above the main entrance providing clean, renewable energy right here at First UU!  Renewable energy such as solar will be necessary to address climate change as it represents a reduction in our ‘carbon footprint’, mainly by offsetting coal-burning energy production here in this region.

As a visible commitment to our Unitarian Universalist 7th Principle (respect for the interdependent web of all existence), this is a tangible and concrete way that we can live out our faith’s values and contribute to the healing of our larger world.

Partner Organizations:

FLOW (Friends of the Lower Olentangy Watershed)

olentangywatershed.org

First UU worked with FLOW to develop its rain gardens that allow water from First UU’s campus to infiltrate into the soil rather than creating run-off that contributes to pollution and flooding.

“FLOW (Friends of the Lower Olentangy Watershed) was formed as a non-profit 501c3 in August 1997. Our mission is to keep the Olentangy River and its tributaries clean and safe for all to enjoy, through public education, volunteer activities, and coordination with local decision-makers.”

Interfaith Power and Light

First UU worked with Interfaith Power and Light in their campaign for house energy efficiency audits.

“Interfaith Power & Light is mobilizing a religious response to global warming. Our mission is to inspire and mobilize people of faith and conscience to take bold and just action on climate change.”
