Friday News – June 24, 2022

Happy GA Week!

Every year, I’m amazed at how much I get out of each of the events that I attend at General Assembly. From worship services to workshops, and yes, even general sessions where we do the business of Unitarian Universalism. This year, I especially found the Berry Street lecture to be a moving, challenging, thought provoking, and overall powerful example of Unitarian Universalism during these times. (The Berry Street Lecture is the longest running lecture series in North America, with this year being it’s 202nd year.)

Rev. Mykal Slack’s lecture entitled More Faith, Power, and People: Breaking the Cycles That Separate Us from Unitarian Universalism, calls all of us, religious professionals, lay leaders and congregants to “actually live into a UUism that is robust, innovative, dynamic, and worthwhile for all of us.” The video of this lecture isn’t up yet, but I would be happy to share the link once it’s available to anyone who would like to watch or read it.

Thank you for all the work you do every day, to help all of us live into this imagining of what UUism can be and for making First UU such a wonderful community. Be sure to check out all of the important announcements below, and, as always, please reach out if you have any questions!

Virtual hugs,

Kelli McNeal
Director of Congregational Life

*Please let Kelli know of any announcements you would like in Friday News by 8 pm Wednesday, and put “Friday News” in the subject line – so that we can be sure to not miss your email! Let us know if you have any questions!

For your protection from scammers and stalkers, we have an OPT IN directory. You have to let us know if you want your name and contact information included! If you do not let us know using the OPT IN option, you will not be included. And your church friends will have a hard time reaching out to you. (You only need to fill this out ONCE.)

If you would like to be included in the directory, please fill out this membership update form and let us know which information you would and wouldn’t like listed. If you are a member and would like a copy of the directory, please contact Marian Garcia in the front office.

Volunteer to Teach!
Invest in the future of our congregation and our world by volunteering with our children and youth! Your help is needed to create a robust program and the community that we dream about! Volunteers are generally asked to participate about two Sundays per month, with a flexible schedule and plenty of support. Fill out this form to volunteer with our Religious Exploration (RE) programs for children, youth, and families next church year! Thank you!
Labor Day Retreat
Interested in Labor Day Retreat, but unsure what activities will be offered? Us too. Help us build the Labor Day Retreat you will be excited about by volunteering to organize a one to three-hour activity. Past years have included nature hikes, organizing car pools for pool time at the State Park, tie dying, arts & crafts, UU history, and more. Anything that you enjoy will probably be well received.

Pandemic Policy Update

First UU has moved to Mask Optional. For RE on Sundays we suggest children age 2+ years wear masks during indoor group time, but may choose to take them off outdoors, when we are more spaced out. We encourage all families to do what feels comfortable and safe for you!
