Friday News – June 17, 2022

Happy June!

Wow, what a crazy week! I hope that if you lost power, it has come back on for you by now.

As many of us make preparations to head off to General Assembly (either in person or virtually), I’m reminded of how truly important community is. Whether it’s supporting your neighbor who needs to find a cool place to stay, or gathering with thousands of our UU siblings to reconnect and discuss important business, community is at the heart. I hope that all of us can find the space to pause and reflect on those who help us feel connected and loved.

Thank you all for making First UU such a wonderful community. Be sure to check out all of the important announcements below, and, as always, please reach out if you have any questions!

Virtual hugs,

Kelli McNeal
Director of Congregational Life

*Please let Kelli know of any announcements you would like in Friday News by 8 pm Wednesday, and put “Friday News” in the subject line – so that we can be sure to not miss your email! Let us know if you have any questions!

For your protection from scammers and stalkers, we have an OPT IN directory. You have to let us know if you want your name and contact information included! If you do not let us know using the OPT IN option, you will not be included. And your church friends will have a hard time reaching out to you. (You only need to fill this out ONCE.)

If you would like to be included in the directory, please fill out this membership update form and let us know which information you would and wouldn’t like listed. If you are a member and would like a copy of the directory, please contact Marian Garcia in the front office.

This Week’s Sunday Service! 6/19

In Galveston Texas, on June 19th, 1865, two and a half years after the Emancipation Proclamation, the last remaining legal slaves in the United States were freed. So often, justice and liberation come later than we expected. Or, we find out that a freedom or privilege we enjoy isn’t equally experienced by others. Let’s celebrate Juneteenth and learn about how we can become a more liberating and multicultural community

Volunteer to Teach!

Anti-Racist Allies Workshop on Microagressions – 6/19
In our beloved community at First UU, we are working on ways to support each other through the difficult work required of all of us in eradicating racism. The Anti-Racist Allies group is hosting a workshop this Sunday (6/19) after our service, 11:30-12:30, on Microaggressions. Racial microaggressions are brief, commonplace interactions that, whether intentional or unintentional, usually involve demeaning implications and other subtle insults against someone based on their race/ethnicity. More details to come in our Juneteenth service. We hope you will join us!

Please note, masks are required for this workshop.
Care and Share Time Bank: June Gathering – 6/19
The Care and Share Time Bank (CSTB) a community-building organization that is a sub-group of JAM, is holding its June Gathering this Sunday at First UU at 6:30 in Beach Hall. The topic is: Deaf Culture.

The presentation will be led by RaVen Sequoia, a long time member of CSTB, who will speak with the assistance of a deaf interpreter. All are welcome, whether CSTB members or not. Masks will be worn.

This will be both in person, and online. Join the gathering by clicking here.

Pandemic Policy Update
