Friday’s News & Updates!

February 5, 2021

Good Friday Evening!

Call it pandemic brain, or whatever you want, but apparently I can’t keep track of what day it is! Please forgive me for this email coming out later than normal! I wonder if this is something that many of us are and have been experiencing during the pandemic. Every day feeling the same. Work and fun intermingling with each other, confusing our bodies with what we should be doing to take care of ourselves.

I’ll admit that for me, this past year has been difficult to keep work and home separate. Since I have an autoimmune condition, I’ve been staying home as much as I possibly can, but that leaves my brain confused with when it’s time to set work aside and do something to care for my mind and body. And, yes, some days it works the opposite way – it’s hard to convince my brain that yes, I’m home, but it’s time to get work done now.

Maybe you’ll take a moment with me right now to sit back, close your eyes and just pause for a minute or two. And maybe that minute or two turns into three or four.  Sounds good to me! (And then when you’re done, take a moment to check out the Auction website and bid on week one items before they disappear at 11:59 pm tomorrow!)

Just a reminder, if you would like an announcement in the Friday News, please email me no later than Wednesday at 8:00 pm with FRIDAY NEWS in the subject line.

Virtual hugs,

Introducing Faith Forward – Our new adult RE curriculum!
We are so excited to introduce Faith Forward, an adult RE curriculum developed by the First Unitarian Church of Dallas. We will begin this curriculum with Spiritual Practices – a 12 session series that helps us to develop regular disciplines of the spirit – practices that help us connect with the sacred. You do not need to attend all of the sessions, so if you can’t attend one or a couple, don’t let that stop you from participating!

Session five is Monday, February 8th at 7:00 pm. The topic is Meditation and the course objectives are:
– Be introduced to mindfulness practice
– Be introduced to types of meditation and its fruits
– Experience meditation and instruction

Visit our website to learn more about Faith Forward, register for the Spiritual Practices class, and see the other incredible courses that are being offered next!

First UU Bible Class
Join us for our next Bible Class, Tuesday February 9th, at 7:30 pm. The theme for this year’s class is “Great Bible Stories.” For Zoom information, please email Ron Payne. Zoom details are sent in advance of each session.

First UU Auction

Have you bid yet for our Week 1 Auction – Let’s Eat?! If not, you have until Saturday, February 6th by 11:59 pm to put in your bids. There’s still time to get that special dessert, gift certificate or seat at a Zoom or in-person dinner, but don’t wait! At midnight Sunday February 7th its “pencils down,” or in our case, “clickers off.”

Tip: You can set a hidden max with your bid and the website will bid for you as needed, then email you if your maximum has been out-bid. Check your spam folder if you see “Others” but not “You” in the list of bidders on items you want.

Go to and choose the Auction 2021 website button. If you have any questions, please email us at

Our Week 2 Auction – Good Stuff begins at 12:01 AM on Sunday, February 7th. There are over 200 items to bid on. (We know some of you haven’t been shopping much lately. Well, here’s your chance!)

Mystics Group Presentation
The Mystics group at First UU is offering a virtual presentation and discussion with Prof. Christopher Bache entitled “The Birth of the Diamond Soul: Where is Reincarnation taking Humanity?” on Tuesday February 9 from 7:30-9:00 pm. Chris’ passion has been the study of philosophical implications of nonordinary states of consciousness, especially psychedelic states. There is no fee to attend, and a free will donation is appreciated to recognize this speaker. For registration and to make an offering, see For further information, please contact Sylvia Howe (978) 317-0013.
Red Oak Community School Can Drive
Help us support Red Oak Community School’s (ROCS) goal of collecting 500 food items to donate to CRC. Students from two of their classes, the Chickadees and Robins, decided after reading the folktale “Stone Soup” that they wanted to do something to help those in need. If you would like to help them meet their goal of collecting 500 items in honor of their 5 year anniversary, please drop any of the below grocery items in the green bin outside the front door of the church. Deadline is February 8th.

Food donations requested:
Canned/boxed soups, vegetables, fruits
Pastas, sauces
Canned proteins (tuna, chicken, nut butters)
Kid friendly snacks
Meal cups kids can make themselves (mac-n-cheese, noodle, or soup cups)
Powdered milk

(We are so grateful to share our building with ROCS. I love working and hearing the children outside our office hallway. I’m so thankful that they invited us to participate in this fundraiser. I hope you will help them meet their goal.)

BIPOC Group Gathering
If you identify as Black, Indigenous, or a person of color (BIPOC), you’re invited to join us for the Central East Region’s BIPOC gathering – happening two Mondays per month at 6:30 pm.

In our gatherings, we are joined by lay folx of color, lay leaders of color and/or religious professionals of color to be in community. Our conversations focus on topics like wellness and resilience, and our goal is to center BIPOC experiences and create space to explore our UU experiences.

Please email Sana Saeed, or Paula Cole Jones for Zoom information. Dates for Winter/Spring Gatherings: February 8 & 22, March 8 & 22, April 12 & 26, May 10 & 24, and June 14 & 28.

Caregivers Group
Please join us Tuesday, February 9th, on Zoom at 1:00 pm for our next Caregivers Support Group. This meeting is open to everyone who is currently a caregiver, or who was a caregiver (the widows among us). Please email Sylvia Howe for Zoom information.

We need your help!
We would like to include more of our wonderful First UU community in our worship services! We are looking for three minute videos where you either:

  1. tell us a personal story related to the monthly theme (listed below),
  2. share how you became a part of First UU and what the church means to you,
  3. or what brought you to Unitarian Universalism.

We will use these videos throughout the year in our services. If you would like to contribute a video, please send them to Kelli McNeal.

Monthly themes: February (Beloved Community), March (Commitment), April (Becoming), May (Story), June (Play)
