Seven. Members function in the major focus of SPAN - which is to solicit signatures for an initiative petition; Some have made financial contributions; one makes group presentations.
Purpose
SPAN is a statewide coalition of organizations and individuals seeking fundamental health care reform in Ohio and ultimately the United States so that every individual is guaranteed comprehensive coverage. We advocate for the creation of a public fund which would pay all health care costs without co-payments or deductibles.
Scope
The coalition is statewide with endorsements received from medical professionals, churches, elected officials, labor unions, and individuals from all walks of life.
Justification for First UU Support
The UU principles concerning the inherent worth and dignity of every individual, and justice, equity, and compassion apply to SPAN. SPAN's main expenses are printing of educational materials and petitions. Future goals include paid petition circulators and additional media coverage.

Medical debt is a major cause of personal bankruptcy. Lack of health insurance places many people at risk of poverty, chronic disability, and death.
