First UU Coordinator
Ginnie Vogts
Group leader of the RESULTS Domestic Group, one of two RESULTS groups in Ohio.
# of UU's involved
Six. Participants are activists and partners in RESULTS - learning
about hunger and poverty issues, writing letters to members of
congress, writing letters to newspapers, holding educational forums,
meeting with elected officials.
Purpose
RESULTS celebrated its 25th anniversary in 2005. RESULTS is a
grassroots citizens advocacy group dedicated to eliminating hunger and
the worst aspects of poverty. RESULTS has over 100 groups in the U.S.
some focus on domestic issues and others on global issues such as child
survival, micro-credit, and funding to fight TB, malaria, and HIV.
Scope
Columbus RESULTS is primarily domestic. We have worked on legislation
for Head Start, TANF Reauthorization, tax cuts, healthcare for all,
food stamps and child care as well as asset development for low income
families.
Justification for First UU support
There has been an active RESULTS group based in First UU Church for
seven years. From this small group we have built a coalition of
activists throughout Central Ohio committed to taking action on issues
to fund programs for low income families.
Funding sources
Membership $230,000; Foundation $20,000; Fund Raising $35,000
Additional information
One of the benefits of RESULTS is that is crates the political will to
use the democratic process to make change. More people at First UU are
writing letters to members of Congress, expressing their opinions in
letters to newspapers and calling elected officials than ever before.
Conference Call
Results has a conference call on the second Saturday of the month during which
we connect with the other Results groups throughout the country, hear from
experts on a pertinent topic, review legislative agenda, practice effective
speaking, share experiences and plan our actions. Anyone wishing to join us for
lunch and the conference call may contact Ginnie Vogts at 614- 580-7005.
